Given their ages and likely involvement in other school activities, an after-school or summer program will likely be most appropriate.  Selected candidates from this age group may be able to participate extended summer programs.

PROJECT 1:1000 staff to coordinate with school administration in the arrangement of a program based on the school and district needs, latitude, and student interest.  Full or partial high school credit is likely available for program participation.  Full or partial college credit may be arranged and accepted in some cases.  Written practice and output would also benefit any required college entrance essays.

While a PROJECT 1:1000 program is not a substitute for regular English classes, it may well provide alternative circumstances and settings more conducive to free, encouraged, and affirmed expression.

Sample program basics:

  1. Design, communication, and coordination with district and school.
  2. Meeting 1: Initial meeting with students.  Introductions and discussions of timeline and schedule, requirements, expectations, and protocols.  Community-building and guided spontaneous writings.  1:1000 Assignment #1 given.
  3. Meeting 2: Meet with group.  Discuss week, techniques, process, highs and lows of 1:1000 Assignment #1.  Student sharing and guided critique.  1:1000 Assignment #2 given.
  4. Repeat #3 as per timeline and schedule.
  5. End of Program presentation: Show and tell of student works. Students read their text with corresponding image projected.

Goal: 1000 words every 1-2 weeks, perhaps more depending on program design
